Paying monthly Union dues is a component of your contract and your contract has not changed since AFA was certified as our new bargaining representative. The contract makes the payment of dues a requirement of employment and provides a method for having dues deducted directly from your paycheck. The vast majority of Flight Attendants prefer this method of payment for the convenience and the simple accounting of dues for tax deduction at the end of the year.
AFA monthly dues are $43 a month. You have probably noticed that the monthly Union dues were not deducted from your most recent paycheck. Management has decided that each CAL/CMI Flight Attendant will have to sign a new Dues Check-Off form authorizing the Company to deduct monthly for remittance to AFA. It is unfortunate that management has made the decision to place this administrative burden on you, but AFA will work to make it as simple as possible for you to complete a new Dues Check-Off form. We are providing access to the form in the crew room and it will also be mailed to your home.
No Dues Payment Required for July
AFA is not requiring a dues payment in the month of July. Consistent with our contract, we will pay our union dues in the month following our dues obligation. In other words, we will pay our July dues in August and our August dues in September and so on moving forward. The practical result of this is that we will not be required to make a union dues payment in the month of July.
AFA Board of Directors Approves 10% Dues Reduction Option
On July 14th, the AFA Board of Directors unanimously voted to make an exception this year for the normal July 1 deadline in order to allow Continental and Continental Micronesia Flight Attendants AFA members to participate in the 10% discount on dues. This was proposed by the Continental delegates to the Board meeting, which in total includes each local president from throughout AFA.
At the beginning of each fiscal year for the union, AFA offers a 10% reduction in total dues obligation if an AFA member elects to pay dues annually. Each fiscal year begins in June. The AFA Constitution and Bylaws requires annual payments to be made by July 1 in order to take advantage of the 10% reduction to annual dues. The Board action will allow CAL and CMI AFA members to participate in the discount.
The dues obligation for Continental and Continental Micronesia Flight Attendants in the 2011-2012 fiscal year is eleven months. This is a total of $473.00 for the eleven months. If a Flight Attendant elects to take advantage of the 10% savings by paying the “annual” dues the total is $425.70.
In order to take advantage of this 10% savings option the AFA Constitution and Bylaws requires that a Flight Attendant must be an AFA member. The one-time exception approved by the AFA Board of Directors moves the deadline for this option to September 1, 2011.
In order to take advantage of this 10% savings do the following:
- Complete an AFA Membership Application
- Make a payment of $425.70 by September 1, 2011
- Make a payment on-line using Visa or MasterCard at www.afacwa.org/payment. In the Payment Information select “$425.70 CAL/CMI Annual Dues” from the drop down menu.
- Write a check to AFA-CWA, include your employee number on the check and send it to:

AFA Dues Directly Support Your Representation
Union dues are the resources we use to support our representation. Dues money ensures we have access to union representatives locally and attorneys to represent us and enforce our contract. All of AFA’s dues money is allocated for Flight Attendant representation, including negotiations, communications, grievance protections and arbitrations and expert staff. Dues simply provide us with the means to advance and protect our jobs – in addition to the programs that support Flight Attendants at work such as our work on safety, health and security in the cabin, AFA EAP and professional standards, hotel, scheduling and reserve committees, and advocacy in Washington DC.
Initiation Fee Waived
On June 30th, AFA Local Council Presidents from Newark, Cleveland and Houston put forward a motion to request a waiver of the AFA initiation fee for new members currently working at Continental and Continental Micronesia. AFA CAL MEC President Frank Brown took the request to the AFA Executive Board (EBOD), consisting of the MEC Presidents from each of the 23 AFA member airlines, and the EBOD unanimously approved the request. Current Continental and Continental Micronesia Flight Attendants are not required to pay the member initiation fee.
