JNC Update – Friday, February 22, 2013

The JNC has completed our third negotiations session with United Airlines management this week in Seattle.

As we told you previously, at the end of our last session in Los Angeles United management asked to see the JNC’s proposal on Crew Meals.  When bargaining resumed this week United presented us with a counter proposal and we in turn, responded with one of our own.  This exchange of proposals generated a lengthy discussion on Crew Meals, and will require more analysis.

We also received management’s counter proposal on CJA and Reciprocal Cabin Seat, which was presented to United in December.  The JNC responded with a counter proposal, which generated a lot of discussion between the parties on how Jumpseating is supposed to work versus the current state of affairs. The Company continues to review our latest proposal.  We also presented our proposal on Passports, Visas and Immunizations. Though it was presented to management in December, we have not received their counter proposal on Commuter Policy.

In addition to our bargaining sessions we received a presentation from Elhan Orhon, VP Financial Planning & Analysis, on the state of United Airlines after last year’s less than stellar performance, and what the prospects are for 2013.

The tone at the table this week was a continuation from our last session in Los Angeles.  The discussions between the parties are collaborative, and it is encouraging that the Company is able to work on more than one proposal at a time.  However, our encouragement is also tempered by the slow pace of bargaining.  The JNC proposed to meet with the Company for two weeks in March, but they are unable to meet for more than one.   The JNC believes the complexity of these negotiations require more bargaining sessions than are currently being scheduled.  We have made this clear to the Company and this will be discussed again at our next session.

Our next negotiations session will take place on March 18th in Houston.  The JNC will return to Chicago next week and continue proposal development.
